Parent-Child Care (PC-Care)
Parenting Protocol

Developed at
UC Davis Children’s Hospital

This training is open to physicians, therapists, healthcare providers, para-professionals who work with children and families, and those who have graduated from receiving PC-Care. If this is you, we invite you to join our PC-Care certification program and learn more than 20 evidence-based parenting strategies to offer families in your care who have children ages 1-12 with emotional or behavioral challenges.

With this brief but powerful protocol, healthcare providers are empowered to co-create a behavior management plan with families using research-backed strategies for emotional regulation and behavior management that are nurturing, effective, and tailored to each family’s strengths, culture, and values.

And because PC-Care was designed to be offered both as therapy and as coaching, it can be provided online to families across state and international lines as a coaching service, regardless of where the provider is licensed.

And all healthcare specializations can benefit, as research has shown that stressed family relationships can impact all areas of a patient’s health. However, healthcare providers equipped with PC-Care interventions can help patients reduce this stress and transform family relationships into a source of well-being that can aid a patient’s physical and mental health.

Training takes place in 3 phases and is spread out conveniently over 2 months on evenings and weekends. It includes online lectures, review of session videos and coding, and a practicum providing online PC-Care appointments that fits your schedule with one family for seven weeks.

Physicians and other healthcare providers whose practices do not easily allow for weekly sessions with their own patients, can complete the practicum by providing the “online parent coaching” format of PC-Care to families in need in our community who have weekend and evening availability. Families interested in receiving these services can click here.

All who complete our PC-Care training program will receive a certificate from UC Davis Children’s Hospital. Mending Hearts’ certification for offering continuing education units for physicians and psychotherapists is in process.

Graduates will be eligible for hire as a Parenting Coach at Mending Hearts. Business coaching scholarships are also available to graduates seeking to build a psychotherapy or parent coaching practice serving either rural, low-income communities or families with children in foster care.

Signups for Fall 2025 are open now.

Scholarships are available for healthcare providers worldwide who are willing to complete the practicum using the “online parent coaching” format with a rural or low income family at no cost to the family.

Currently trainings are only offered in English. Spanish and Italian coming soon!
